General Workshops
The weather’s not looking great – is my workshop still going ahead?
Yes! A bit of rain never stopped us. Some of our workshops are inside, however Campfire Cooking and Axe Throwing are mainly outside. We’ll be largely under cover from the trees, but please bring a waterproof. If we feel the weather is so bad that it impacts the safety of our guests, we will let you know beforehand and you will be offered alternative dates to book on.
Is there a minimum number of people that need to attend?
We do everything we can to run our experiences in a way that is fun and engaging for you. Therefore most of our experiences require a minimum of two attendees – any exceptions will be advertised on the relevant experience page. In the event that the minimum is not reached, you will be offered the opportunity to either reschedule or your money back. We will always give you at least a week’s notice before rescheduling.
What do I wear?
Unless specified otherwise, we recommend you wear old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. We’re located in woodland, and it can get a bit muddy. If you’re joining us for Campfire Cooking, your clothes will also get smoky – but you will be given an apron to stop any food splashes.
I’ve never done anything like this before – will I be able to keep up?
Our Course Leaders are experienced in their fields, and will always be there to help our guests regardless of level. We want to make our experiences open for everyone, so if you’re a complete newbie or have done similar things before, there will be lots of great stuff for everyone.
Are there any forms to fill in?
Our insurers require us to ask each participant to fill in a health and safety form at the beginning of each workshop – it’s nothing serious, we just need to know if there are any medical conditions or injuries that our instructors need to be aware of. You’ll get a full briefing from your instructor beforehand as well as the opportunity to ask any questions.
If you’re joining us for Campfire Cooking, there is a form you will need to complete before the workshop to tell us about any dietary requirements – please see the Campfire Cooking FAQs below.
How do I get there?
Please see the ‘Contact Us’ page for location and directions
I’ve had a change of circumstances and can’t make it anymore – what do I do?
We know that sometimes life can take unexpected turns, and we want to make sure that if this happens, you don’t miss out. If you find out you can no longer attend an experience you’ve booked, please let us know as soon as possible and we will give you gift vouchers to use towards rebooking yourself on another date. If your experience is less than 14 days away, we will give you gift vouchers worth half its value to use towards another date. If your experience is less than 3 days away, unfortunately we will not be able to offer a refund or exchange.
Can I book an experience for a group?
If you are looking to book for a group of 6 or more, please get in contact with us by emailing [email protected]. We are able to offer unlisted dates for groups subject to availability.
Are your workshops suitable for children?
All of our workshops are geared towards adults. We do allow children under the age of 18 to buy a ticket but they must be accompanied, and supervised at all times, by a responsible adult.
For Axe Throwing and Campfire Cooking, please see the specfic FAQs below.
I can’t make any dates listed, can I request another date?
Absolutely – drop us an email at [email protected] and we will see what we can do.
About Our Site
Is there a toilet on site?
Yes.
What is accessibility like at the BackWoods site?
There are no steps on site, however some doorways are narrow and have a raised threshold which can be difficult for wheelchair users to navigate. Due to our location, the ground is uneven in places and can become muddy in bad weather. Our toilets are not currently wheelchair accessible.
We will always do what we can to make our experiences comfortable and enjoyable for everyone. Please get in contact if you would like to ask us any questions about our facilities and site.
Axe Throwing
Is there an age limit for Axe Throwing?
Yes, we allow anyone over the age of 14 to participate in Axe Throwing, but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
If I’m accompanying an under-18, do I need to buy a ticket?
We would always recommend you buy a ticket and get involved – it’s great fun! But, you can watch from the sidelines if you like – you won’t need to buy a ticket for this.
Is it safe?
None of our activities carry zero risk, but Axe Throwing is one that carries significantly more, for obvious reasons. With trained instructors and robust risk assessment, there is plenty in place to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
However, this requires cooperation from you; before you start, you will be asked to sign a form to agree that you will behave in a responsible and safe way at all times. You must also listen to and act on all the instructions and safety information given to you by your instructor.
Our instructors have the right to stop the session at any point if they feel someone’s behaviour is putting them or anyone else at risk.
Campfire Cooking
Can I do Campfire Cooking if I have special dietary requirements?
The first thing to note here is that the objective of the course is to teach you to cook on a campfire. Whether or not you eat the food you have made is completely up to you. Before attending, everyone is asked to fill out a short form to let us know of dietary requirements. So, if you’re pescatarian, vegetarian or vegan, or have any allergies, we can make sure suitable food is bought in for the day. Please complete this form as soon as possible. We will be completely transparent with our lists of ingredients, but of course there can be no guarantee that all food and equipment can be 100% allergen-free. There is no obligation to consume the food provided and the responsibility for that choice is yours alone.
Is it safe to cook on a campfire?
Cooking on a campfire is completely safe, as long as you do it right! You will be given a full Health, Hygiene & Safety briefing before we start, and full support in building and cooking on your fire. As stated above, it is your choice whether you consume the food you have prepared.
Is there an age limit for Campfire Cooking?
All of our workshops are geared towards adults. We do allow children under the age of 18 to buy a ticket but they must be accompanied, and supervised at all times, by a fully paying adult. They should also have the maturity to participate in an adult workshop group for the full day.
